It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day". Purim literally means "lots". Jews celebrate this festival as being saved from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire. HistoryPurim is the most strident holiday according to Jewish colander. It is mandatory to drink alcohol on this day. This holiday starts with dressing up with special costumes. Some people dress up like characters from the Purim story, and other dress as the non-Purim related costumes. Although, some scholars argue that Purim doesn’t actually have a historical basis. CelebrationOn the day of celebration, Jews wear a special costume. Some of them choose to dress as characters from the Purim story, and other dress in non-Purim related costumes. Special foods are eaten on the occasion of Purim. Most of the people drink alcohol on this day. It is mandatory to drink alcohol. Public LifeIt is a federal holiday.
