Flag Day

Flag Day is one of the popular festival of United States. Flag Day is celebrated on 14 June in United States. It is celebrated in the memory of adoption of flag of the United States.

The flag of United States was adopted in 1777. The flag day is also celebrated as Army birthday by United States Army. In 1916, the American president Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that established 14th June as Flag Day.

In 1949, it was established by an act of Congress. The Flag Day is not a federal holiday.

History

On 14, June 1777, the British symbol of grand union flag was replaced by a new design of flag, featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes - one for each state. This flag is probably made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy. The number of stars increases on the flag, if the new states entered the Union.

Celebration

Flag Day is celebrated in National Flag Week. It is the time when Americans reflect on the foundations of the nation's freedom. This flag specifies the freedom and the enduring country's ideal. Most of the Americans display the American flags at homes and public buildings on this day. There are also some ceremonies organized like: flag-raising ceremony, Flag Days services, quizzes, street parades, essay competition on American Flag etc.

Public Life

Flag Day is celebrated almost in all states but it is not a public holiday in many parts of the country. It is a legal holiday in some areas like Montour County, Pennsylvania in USA.
