Rosh Hashanah is a Jewish festival. It literally means the "head of the year". It is a Jewish New Year. It lasts two days. It is celebrated in the memory of the day when the world is created. It is also a judgment day. On this day, Jews believe that God balances a person’s good works over the last year against their bad works, and decides what the next year will be like for them.

Rosh Hashanah is a very religious festival. The customs and symbols of Rosh Hashanah reflect on this festival in form of happiness and humility. Some customs of the Rosh Hashanah are: sounding of the shofar and eating some special foods.

History

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated on the first and second days of Tishri. It is one of the holiest days in the Jewish year. The name of Rosh Hashanah is not mentioned in Bible, it appears under different names in Bible. Though, this holiday was well established by the 6th century B.C. Then, this was celebrated as a new year of Jews, and new resolutions and plans are taken to led a better life.

Celebration

Rosh Hashanah is a very pious and religious festival. It is a time for the Jews to think about their priorities in life and reflect on what has been achieved in the past year. On that time, Jews ask for forgiveness for their misdeeds (sins). People generally ask some questions about their actions throughout the year. These questions may be like this:

  • What is the meaning of my life?
  • What is the most important thing to do in my life?
  • What are the most significant things that I achieve in last year?
  • What do I hope to achieve next year and in my life?

Rosh Hashanah is celebrated in a special manner. On this day, Shofar, a ram's horn trumpet is blown. A hundred notes are sounded in a special rhythm. After the sound of the shofars, a ten-day period starts which is known as "Days of Awe".

Rosh Hashanah is a federal holiday of Jews. Schools, colleges and other business organizations are closed on this day.
